Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger meets AJR members

The AJR was delighted to welcome Baroness Rabbi Julia Neuberger toaddress AJR members at a dinner on Wednesday 5th March 2008.

Recalling anecdotes about her upbringing as the daughter of a German refugee, the Baroness also spoke passionately abou the treatment of the elderly and the mentally infirm. She also responded to several questions from the 70 guests, who included AJR members from the West of England, the Midlands and the East of England in London as part of a three day visit to the capital.

As well as being a Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords, Baroness Neuberger was the first female Rabbi to have her own Synagogue when she officiated at the South London Liberal Synagogue between 1977-1989. She was also the second woman to be ordained as a Rabbi in England.

Alongside her previous roles as Chief Executive of the Kings Fund and member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, she is also a former Chair of the Patients’ Association and a Vice President of the United Nations Association. She is presently a Trustee of the British Council and the Imperial War Museum.
