Southern Regional lunch at Edwina Currie's

Southern region AJR members had a wonderful day out thanks to the generous hospitality of author and former politician Edwina Currie and her husband John.

The couple welcomed into their home members from Brighton, Bromley, Ilford, Kent, Kingston, South London and Surrey and worked tirelessly to make them feel incredibly welcome.

Fine sunny weather meant that people could relax and mingle in the garden and enjoy the delicious food at lunchtime.

After lunch there was a Chachun à Son Goût medley of songs with something to suit all tastes sung by mezzo-chanteuse Naomi Hyamson with Jenny Gould on the keyboard.

The time just flew by and Edwina then gave a talk on her charitable work. She spoke about her association with Nightingale - the Jewish Care Home for elderly people, and with Erich Reich, chairman of the AJR's Kindertransport committee.

On a topical note Edwina mentioned the MPs expenses row. “Like most I’ve been absolutely agog what they got up to. I sometimes wonder if they live in the same world as the rest of us,” she said.
Edwina also described some lighter moments at book signings including being mistaken for Joan Collins!

Susan Kurlander, Head of Social Services then briefly explained about the AJR’s role in helping older people.
