AJR Holocaust Memorial Day service
We were delighted to welcome some 150 guests, including representatives of The Quakers, at our service to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday 28 January 2014.
We were very honoured that the guest speaker was Allan Noel-Baker, the grandson of Philip Noel-Baker, the MP who instigated the famous debate in Parliament of 21 November 1938 called in response to Kristallnacht, the Nazi pogrom that took place on 9 and 10 November 1938 throughout Germany and Austria. The debate concluded with the decision to create the Kindertransport through which some 10,000, mostly Jewish, children aged between 3-17 found refuge in Britain.
Rabbi Stuart Altshuler led the service, during which AJR members lit memorial candles and Kaddish was recited. Guests also heard from AJR member Prof Michael Spiro who spoke on the theme for HMD, Journeys, and Janet Weston, whose father was a refugee from Germany, read the WH Auden poem, Refugee Blues.
