Central Office to co-ordinate Holocaust claims

An Umbrella Group of six organisations, which co-operate in representing and supporting victims of Nazi persecution, has established a Central Office for Holocaust Claims to co-ordinate Holocaust-era restitution and compensation enquiries in the UK. Michael Newman, previously a researcher at the Holocaust Educational Trust and editor of its authoritative newsletter, has been appointed the first claims officer and is based at the AJR’s offices in Hampstead. He recently completed a project as outreach co-ordinator for the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims.

The Central Office will offer information – through the columns of AJR Journal and other communal publications – and provide up-to-date advice and assistance to Holocaust victims and their heirs on restitution and compensation issues, including pensions, frozen bank accounts, unpaid insurance claims and looted art. Wherever possible, support will be given to members of the constituent organisations in pursuing both group and individual outstanding claims. As far as resources will allow, the Central Office will actively campaign to obtain financial assistance for those in need. Advice and assistance with the completion of claims forms will be available by appointment at the London office and on a regular basis in the provinces.

The constituent organisations of the Umbrella Group are: AJR, Jewish Care, Jewish Refugee Committee, Agudas Israel, Claims for Slave Labour Compensation and The 45 Aid Society.

For further information about the services of the Central Office for Holocaust Claims in the first instance please write to Michael Newman, Central Office for Holocaust Claims, 1 Hampstead Gate, 1a Frognal, London NW3 6AL.
