A glaring omission
Sir – Marianne Walter asks (November letters) about Eric Hobsbawm’s perfunctory reference to the Holocaust. Hobsbawm is indeed neither a neo-Nazi nor an antisemite. He is, however, ideologically challenged. What pains him about the twentieth century is not mass killings like the Holocaust or the Stalinist terror, but the failure of Communism.
